What is Non-GMO Project Verified?

Non-GMO Project Verified · Also called Non-GMO Project, non-GMO butterfly, butterfly logo, non-GMO certification, non-GMO verified

Non-GMO Project Verified means a product has been evaluated against the Non-GMO Project Standard for GMO avoidance. It is a voluntary third-party verification shown by the Butterfly mark.

What it is

The program is run by the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit. A participating technical administrator evaluates your product and its supporting documents against the Standard, which sets requirements for ingredients, risk assessment, traceability and, where required, testing. Which requirements apply depends on your product and its inputs.

Verification is not a guarantee of zero GMO material. It is also separate from organic certification and from federal bioengineered food disclosure obligations, and it is not a claim that a product is safer, healthier or allergen-free.

Verification is product by product and renewed each year. Proposed changes to ingredients, suppliers or processes are reviewed through the program.

Why it matters

It takes time and money: fees, documentation from every ingredient supplier, and sometimes a supplier change. Get a product-specific estimate of fees and review time, since formula complexity, ingredient risk and how ready your documents are all drive the work. Plan it before your packaging goes to print.

Check the current version of the Non-GMO Project Standard and its transition rules with your technical administrator before you start.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the Butterfly on packaging too early. Use it only under the applicable verification and licensing permissions, and coordinate artwork approval with your administrator; submitting an application does not authorize the mark.
  • Assuming another verified product made at the same facility covers yours. Your exact ingredients and suppliers are what get reviewed.
  • Changing an ingredient, supplier or process without taking it through the program first.

Common questions

Can I just write “non-GMO” on my label?
A self-declared statement is different from third-party verification and does not authorize the Butterfly. Any statement you make must be supportable and appropriate for the product and market.
